VUM – Laura Palmer

VUM make excellent scaled-down psychadelia centered around Jennifer Pearl’s deep vocals. The use of minimalistic instrumentation effectively gives her voice the room it requires to fawningly blossom. There’s an eerie element to their craft and David Lynch was the first thing that popped in mind. Not so surprising, considering Laura Palmer was the name of the murdered girl in the director’s early 90’s cult television series Twin Peaks. Even so, “Laura Palmer” feels less gloomy than VUM’s 2011 debut album Night Sun, where they constructed textures overly heavy to fully absorb. This is evidently a different direction for the band with resemblance to Teen Dream-era Beach House. However, Pearl’s vocals creates a highly unique and hauntingly beautiful sound.
