Youth Lagoon – Mute

Instant Classic

When Youth Lagoon dropped “Dropla” earlier this year, I was mesmerized by just how much Trevor Power’s music grown and evolved from the minimalistic lo-fi sound of The Year of Hibernation into a wealthy grandiose proclamation of psychedelia. His second release of the year is even more epic, a true statement of where his artistic evolvement has taken him in the two short years since his debut. “Mute” is a giant roar of confidence, filled with heavy-hearted psychedelic tension between warm and beautiful instruments mixed with a hostile and metallic soundscape. Whatever might become of his follow-up is still too early to say, but based on “Dropla” and “Mute”, it’s hard not to expect something wholly remarkable. Wondrous Bughouse is out March 5 via Fat Possum.
