At an initial glance, GEMS might sound like yet another dream-pop act emerging in the wake of Beach House’s success. In fact, the first few seconds of their latest single “Pegasus” is almost a replica of “Silver Soul”. The song continues with familiar hazy instrumentals, leaning on the genre-trademark reverberated guitars as the building-blocks. But about two and a half minutes in the Washington DC duo introduce us to a lush swooning synthesizers that changes the songs character into suggestive synth-pop. It’s a bold move, intensifying and transforming the last two minutes into a bright euphoric bliss. At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter that there so many obvious comparisons to other dream-pop acts, “Pegasus” is the duo’s most promising track to date and a highly memorable accomplishment.
