“Your Life Is A Lie” is a strangle piece of psychedelic music; short, monotonic, repetitive, yet somehow strangely fascinating. Sitting neatly between the debut’s catchiness and Congratulations’ off-kilter psych-pop, it’s also more straightforward pop than anything we’ve heard from MGMT for a while.
But for a band that gave the world magnificent creations such as “Flash Delirium, “Of Moons, Birds & Monsters” and the space-disco anthem of “Electric Feel”, it’s not enough to raise expectations for their third, self-titled record. Their former Record Store Day-teaser “Alien Days” was largely greeted with a shrug of indifference by a jointed press/blogosphere and unfortunately the now couple-of-weeks old “Your Life Is A Lie” seems to share the same destiny.
However, viewed in isolation and without the burden of their back catalogue, “Your Life Is A Life” is an enthusiastic blast of fury with a stunning surrealistic video directed by Tom Kuntz (“Congratulations”). The duo rejoined with legendary Oracular Spectacular producer Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala) that should at least raise hopes for a sonically brilliant record. Time will tell. MGMT is out September 17.
