If you want a bit of timeless psychedelic pop, think The Kinks or heck even Vampire Weekend and The Beatles, then Gap Dream’s “Shine Your Love” is the song for you. For those unfamiliar, Gap Dream is a California via Cleveland based band that last year released their self-titled debut through the Californian label Burger Records (Mikal Cronin, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees). On that album, or actually cassette, was “My Other Man”, an absolutely brilliant piece of lo-fi psychedelic rock that I often find myself returning to. Now, “Shine Your Love” sounds nothing like it, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing; it’s clear that the band is in the midst of evolving towards a more elegant, sonically pure sound that aims for a wider audience. And by the amount of coverage “Shine Your Love” has acquired since its release, it’s safe bet that it will succeed in doing so. I mean, who wouldn’t fall for a line like “Everybody in the whole wide world has gone straight up insane” or “There is no past, there is no future, I wanna be the last executioner”, sung over marching beats and a delicious brass in true Sgt Pepper manner. “Shine Your Love” is the anthem for all of us cynics out there, so enjoy.
The band has a new album coming out on November 12 titled Shine Your Light.
