Montreal’s Thomas Arsenault new project, Mas Ysa, is as schizophrenic as one might expect from a guy who spent the last year touring with such diverse artists as Deerhunter, Marnie Stern, Delorean and Purity Ring. Yet, his first and so far only single “Why”, doesn’t fall near any of the above mentioned acts. Instead it lives solely in the confinement of its own sonically twisted reality – ranging from minimalistic techno to shimmering 80s synth-pop.
It’s a roller-coaster ride of highs and lows, magnificently held together by Arsenault’s verbose vocal delivery. Few tracks, if any, have the power of transcending genres as effectively as “Why” without feeling forced or loss of identity. That in itself is a merit, but the fact that it’s ridiculously addictive and makes it near impossible to avoid pushing the repeat button, underpine the fact that “Why” is one of the most accomplished artist debuts I’ve heard lately.
Mas Ysa’s debut EP is set for release early next year via Downtown Records.
