A month ago CassMcCombs premiered the first track of his upcoming seventh (and a half) album titled Big Wheel and Others. The album is looking out to be quite an eclectic one as McCombs recently told that it will feature 22 “road songs, rock songs, folk songs, blues songs, country songs, rhythm and blues songs, skron non-songs, cinema songs, cult songs, poem songs, jams and ballads”.
New single “Brighter” is a soft emotional journey where the late actress Karen Black lends her beautiful voice. Unfortunately, the Oscar-nominated actress past away last month at the age of 72 after battling cancer, and as McCombs stated on his website, the song is dedicated in her memory.
Black and McCombs have collaborated once earlier, on 2009’s waltz-y “Dreams Come True Girl”, but this time he lets Karen’s voice take up all the stage, while he creates the setting with marching drums and slide guitars. It’s a hauntingly beautiful song portrayed with dark undertones that gets increasingly more so with the awareness of recent turn of events. She lives on in the spirit of this song, with a voice shining brighter than ever.
