Next to James Murphy’s LCD Soundsystem, I believe The Juan MacLean is DFA’s most prominent act. He has been with the label since the beginning and much like Murphy, has a punk rock background as part of Six-Ginger Satellite. This punk/house hybrid is what gave DFA its edge and made it possible to successfully maintained its position as one of the most important electronic labels for over a decade.
MacLean released a couple classics at the beginning of the last decade and while those early creations may have lost some of its original flair, his 2005 electronic P-Funk anthem “Give Me Every Little Thing” from 2005’s Less Than Human, stands just as tall today as it did back then, easily ranking amongst the greatest house tracks of the last decade. Less Than Humans was trailed by the comparatively overlooked The Future Will Come that contained the impressive 12 minute “Happy House”, featuring the former LCD Soundsystem member Nancy Whang on vocals.
Moving forward to now, and we once again find Whang and MacLean collaborating on the retro-futuristic house stomper “Feel Like Movin”. The track is taken from a split single with Shit Robot and marks the first taste of MacLeans up-coming third full-length. By any measures, “Feel Like Movin” is his best work since “Give Me Every Little Thing”, which in itself is impressive, but the fact that Whang delivers her best and most catchy performance on any of her MacLean collaborations, adds further to the notion that this is one of the most impressive and effective house releases of the year. And with that in mind, “Feel Like Movin” casts a huge shadow over Disclosure’s debut album.
Also, here’s another great Whang/MacLean collaboration released earlier this year:
