To my surprise, “Passing Out Pieces”, the first taste of Mac DeMarco’s upcoming new album titled Salad Days, mostly lacked his signature Alesis MicroVerb 4 rackmount processed six-strings. Instead the space was mostly filled with synthetic horns and organs. Since 2 was, and still is, an album I gladly return to with certain regularity, my towering expectation left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Thankfully, new single “Brother” corrects the mistake with a wet, chirping guitar play that is no less than stunning. Almost as if played in slow-mo, “Brother” plays out like a wonderful narcotic jangle pop that displays DeMarco’s most melodious and instantly gratifying songwriting skills. Salad Days is out on April 1 via Captured Tracks.
